Seasonal Allergies: Can Your Chiropractor Make a Difference?

While most people are gushing over the blooming flowers and the smell of freshly cut grass, you’re popping yet another allergy pill to hold back the inevitable red, watery eyes, congestion, and runny nose. And while medication has its place, many can cause side effects like drowsiness. Why not look for a more natural alternative? Your chiropractor may be able to do just that.

To better understand what a chiropractor can do for your allergies let’s talk about what causes them. An allergic reaction occurs when your immune system overreacts to the surrounding environment. Your immune system’s job is to keep harmful substances out of your body, but sometimes it confuses a harmless substance like pollen or pet dander for something dangerous. That’s when you experience the allergic reaction.

Your immune system is governed by your nervous system. When your nervous system isn’t working correctly it changes the way your immune system works.  That’s where chiropractic treatment comes in.

Many people have reported that since starting to receive chiropractic treatment, their allergy symptoms reduced considerably.  How so? It has already been proven that chiropractic adjustments are beneficial to the nervous system. When the spine is misaligned or the movements are dysfunctional, a central irritation in the spine can occur. This irritation sends an irregular signal to the central nervous system and can result in an allergic reaction.

Here are some other tips to keep your allergies under control while still making regular chiropractic visits.

1.    Leave your shoes at the door and get out of your pollen-covered clothes. Shower immediately after working in the yard or spending a lot of time outside. Get that pollen off your body and down the drain.

2.    Close your windows. Yes, the nice fresh air is hard to resist. But if you can’t enjoy the spring scents because of your clogged sinuses, it’s best to keep the doors and windows shut.

3.    Avoid alcohol. Did you know alcohol can increase the blood flow to the lining of your nose, thus increasing congestion?

The benefits of chiropractic adjustments have been experienced by many who suffer from allergies. Of course, many other factors can contribute to allergies, such as stress, pollution, and even genetics. While most of those causes are out of our control, there are steps you can take to help relieve your allergy symptoms. Why not give your chiropractor the chance to help?
