Life Lessons from a Tired Millennial Parent: A Chiropractor’s Take on Self-Care
As a millennial parent, you’re juggling work, family, and a never-ending to-do list. Somewhere between school drop-offs, late-night diaper changes, and keeping up with work emails, your own well-being has taken a backseat. As a chiropractor—and a fellow exhausted parent—I’m here to remind you: self-care isn’t selfish; it’s survival.
Your Posture Is a Reflection of Your Stress
Ever caught yourself hunched over your laptop, shoulders creeping toward your ears? Or maybe cradling your phone, doom scrolling away in a self-destructive way of delaying the chaos of the next day for just a bit longer? Poor posture isn’t just about aching muscles—it’s your body’s way of screaming for help. Make a habit of setting posture reminders. Roll your shoulders back, sit up straight, and consider ergonomic seating. Bonus tip: Your bed is for two things, sleep, and well, you know (wink wink)… It is virtually impossible to do anything else in your bed with even decent posture.
Move, Even When You Don’t Feel Like It
Parenting often means sitting in long meetings, standing while making endless school lunches, or collapsing into bed without a second thought about movement. But movement is essential—not just for physical health but also for mental well-being. Even a few minutes of stretching, walking, or deep breathing can make a difference. Try standing up every hour, rolling out stiff joints, or incorporating family dance breaks (Alexa, play “Danny Go”).
Hydration Is a Game-Changer
Let’s be honest—you make sure your kids have their water bottles at all times, yet forget your own hydration needs. Water keeps your joints lubricated, prevents muscle cramps and headahces, and helps maintain energy levels. Keep a reusable water bottle nearby as a visual reminder. And if plain water isn’t your thing? Try herbal teas, fresh fruit infused water, or sweetener free sparkling water (or Spicy Water, as my 4 yr old calls it).
Sleep is Non-Negotiable
If your body could talk, it would beg you for better sleep. Sure, parenting doesn’t always allow uninterrupted eight-hour nights, but creating a sleep-friendly environment can help. Reduce screen time before bed, invest in a good pillow, and try stretching or deep breathing to unwind before sleep. Remember: you can’t pour from an empty cup, and exhaustion isn’t a badge of honor.
Prioritize Care
You schedule doctor’s appointments for your little ones, but when was the last time you checked in with your own health? Chiropractic care is a fantastic way to reset, relieve tension, and improve mobility—especially if your daily life involves carrying children, bending constantly, sitting in front of a screen for work, or dealing with stress-induced muscle tightness. Regular adjustments can help restore balance to your body and keep you moving more efficiently.
Final Thoughts
Parenting is a marathon, not a sprint. And while your kids need you, they also need you to be well. Small daily habits—whether adjusting your posture, taking deep breaths, or finally booking that chiropractic appointment—can make a world of difference. Because the truth is, taking care of yourself isn’t just good for you—it’s the best lesson you can teach your children about valuing health.
